The
Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca County Solid Waste District sponsored this program to
promote battery recycling and reduce the amount of batteries that are being
improperly stored by residents of the district.
"This is the 12th year
we are offering this program to District residents. To date, we have collected
43,844 batteries which demonstrates the continuing need for this
collection,” said Tim Wasserman, Director of the Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca
Joint Solid Waste District.
According to the
Battery Council International (BCI), a nonprofit trade association based in
Chicago, batteries are accumulating in people's garages and basements. This
poses a danger if the batteries crack or deteriorate. It is estimated that
twenty percent of Americans are storing two or more old batteries.
Batteries can be
recycled and used to make new batteries, cable coverings, light bulbs,
electronic equipment, radiation shielding and other useful products. Some
of the sulfuric acid in batteries can be reused in new batteries or in
fertilizer. Most of it is neutralized for safe disposal. Battery casings
are recycled into new casings, wastebaskets and other plastic products.
When you transport your
battery to the collection site remember to keep it right side and up and
carry it in a wooden box or leak proof container. If you drop a battery,
use baking soda or lime to neutralize any spilled acid. Use gloves and
avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. |
